Waste and Recycling in Santa Teresa Area

The simplest way to manage waste is not to create it in the first place. Recycling helps, but it still requires collection, transport, sorting and somewhere willing to process the material.

In Santa Teresa, municipal recycling collection is handled by BIONIC. Accepted materials need to be prepared correctly and placed at a station or along the appropriate collection route.

In either case, prepare two transparent bags: glass bottles in one, other accepted materials in the second. Both must be clean and dry.

Handle ordinary rubbish carefully

Non-recyclable waste collection is listed for Monday and Friday, from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Ask your accommodation where rubbish should be stored and when it is collected.

  • Use closed, strong bags.

  • Keep bags protected from rain.

  • Store them where dogs and wildlife cannot open them.

  • Put them outside close to collection time.

  • Bring them back in if collection is missed.

  • Never leave them beside a full bin or recycling station.

Rain and animals can move loose waste into drains, streams and eventually the sea.

What you can recycle

BIONIC accepts plastic bottles and containers marked #1, #2 or #5, aluminium cans, Tetra Pak cartons and glass bottles.

Keep out paper, cardboard, other plastics, bags and wrappers, food, scrap metal, polystyrene, electronics, flat glass and ceramics. BIONIC sorts accepted materials after collection; you only need to separate the glass.

Where to take it

BIONIC stations are opened 24/7, check that a station has space before leaving your bags.

Street collection

Put your bags out the night before your route. Collection starts at 6 AM Tuesday in Playa Hermosa and Santa Teresa, and 6 AM Wednesday in Playa Carmen, Mal País and San Isidro.

If you are unsure where to leave your bags, send BIONIC your location pin on WhatsApp: +506 8330 2970. Ask your accommodation separately about ordinary rubbish; these are recycling routes.

Food and organic waste

Ask whether your accommodation has an established composting system and what it accepts.

Do not throw food into vegetation or create an improvised compost pile. Food waste can attract animals, create smells and cause problems for neighbours.

When composting is unavailable, seal food waste and follow the property’s ordinary-waste instructions.

Batteries, electronics and chemicals

The regular BIONIC recycling route does not accept electronic waste.

Keep these items separate:

  • Batteries

  • Phones, chargers and cables

  • Light bulbs

  • Electronic equipment

  • Paint and solvents

  • Motor oil

  • Pesticides

  • Medicines

  • Gas canisters

Ask BIONIC, the municipal environmental office or an authorized collector about the correct disposal route. Never pour chemicals, oil or medicine into a sink, toilet, drain or onto the ground.

Create less waste

Carry a refillable bottle and shopping bag. Choose refillable toiletries and cleaning products when available, and decline takeaway items you will not use. That means fewer things to store, sort and collect.

Beach cleanups

Nicoya Peninsula Waterkeeper posts local cleanup opportunities. Check its current posts for the next date and follow the team’s instructions on what to bring.

Ways to support locally

Refill and reuse where you can. Prepare recycling as BIONIC requests, keep ordinary rubbish secured from animals and rain, and take your waste home when beach bins are full.

FAQ

Does BIONIC accept electronics?
Not through the standard recycling collection. Ask about a dedicated collection option.

Do recyclables need to be washed?
They need to be empty, reasonably clean and dry. Food or liquid contamination can prevent recovery.

Do I need to sort every plastic and can?
No. Put accepted, clean and dry materials together in one transparent bag. Keep glass bottles in a separate transparent bag.

Can I leave bags at a station outside collection hours?
BIONIC says its stations are open 24/7. Check that the station has space before leaving anything.
