For a small beach town at the end of a dirt road, Santa Teresa has a shockingly complete fitness scene, real gyms, daily yoga, physiotherapy, breathwork, run clubs, because it's full of people whose lifestyle is the point. Medical care is the thinner layer. Here's the map.
Training
Gyms. Town has proper weight gyms with day, week and month rates, Central Gym is a fixture community members reference, and finding a lifting partner is literally a one-message operation in our chat ("anyone at Central want a lifting buddy?" is a real, answered post). Expect open-air or semi-open spaces, humidity as a free sauna, and equipment that's better than the town's size has any right to provide.
Yoga. Multiple studios run daily drop-in classes across styles and levels, one of the most-asked newcomer questions ("good studio for drop-ins?") with consistently plural answers. Class packs beat single drop-ins quickly; many accommodations and hotels also host open classes.
Run club and pickup sports. The community run club meets in the early morning (followed, correctly, by coffee), and pickup football, volleyball, and hike crews assemble through the chat weekly, the Cabo Blanco reserve hike is a recurring group favorite. Green-season note: trail runs become mud runs; embrace it or switch to the beach at low tide, which is the town's true running track.
Recovery. Physiotherapy, massage and bodywork are well represented, surfers keep them in business. Fisiosana is a physio option members have pointed each other to, and community recommendations for specific practitioners flow freely; independent massage and bodywork practitioners regularly introduce themselves through the community.
When you're sick or hurt
- Pharmacies in town handle the everyday layer, pharmacists here can advise and dispense more than you may be used to at home, making them the correct first stop for minor issues.
- Local clinics cover general consultations, stitches, and the surf town's greatest hits (ear issues, fin cuts, staph-prone reef rash, clean every cut aggressively here; humidity is unforgiving).
- Serious matters mean Cobano's public clinic or the hospital-level care in Nicoya or San José. This is the real constraint of paradise: proper emergency care is hours away. Have travel/health insurance that covers evacuation, know your policy's process before you need it, and keep your insurer's number offline-accessible.
- Dentists exist regionally; for major dental work, many combine it with a San José trip.
Ask the community for current practitioner recommendations rather than trusting a year-old blog, providers here change seasonally, and someone in the chat saw a doctor about your exact issue last month.
The unglamorous essentials
Hydration salts (heat + surf + occasional stomach bugs), high-SPF sunscreen as a budget line item, mosquito repellent in green season, and treating every scratch like it matters. The health problems nomads actually get here are sunburn, dehydration, infected cuts and overuse injuries from surfing every single day after years of desk life, all preventable, none requiring a hospital if handled early.
