Getting to Santa Teresa: Ferry, Shuttle, Flight or Drive (2026)

Santa Teresa sits at the end of the Nicoya Peninsula, and getting here from San José airport (SJO) takes 4–6 hours by land-and-ferry or about 25 minutes by tiny plane. There's no wrong answer, just trade-offs between money, time and luggage. Here are all five options, as our community actually uses them.

1. Shared shuttle (the default)

Door-to-door vans from SJO via the Puntarenas–Paquera ferry. Around 5–6 hours total, moderate cost, zero navigation stress. Book a day ahead in high season. Best for: first-timers, solo travelers, anyone landing before ~2pm (late arrivals risk missing the last ferry connection).

2. Drive yourself (ferry route)

Rent a 4x4 at SJO, drive ~1.5h to Puntarenas, take the car ferry to Paquera (see the full Tambor ferry guide, the operator is Naviera Tambor and booking ahead online matters in high season), then ~1.5h of progressively rougher road to Santa Teresa. A 4x4 isn't optional decoration: the last stretch is dirt, and in green season parts of the wider peninsula involve rivers. Two hard-won community rules about rivers: cross at low tide, and if you must cross, second gear in 4x4, steady throttle. When in doubt, wait or ask a local, cars drown here every season.

One more community warning for anyone renting or buying locally instead: a vehicle with no papers is most likely stolen, and missing marchamo (the annual road tax sticker) or Dekra (the vehicle inspection) means fines and headaches are on you. Check all three before money changes hands.

3. Drive the long way (no ferry)

Around the Gulf of Nicoya via the Friendship Bridge, roughly 5.5–6.5 hours, no ferry timing stress, useful when ferry queues explode on holiday weekends. More driving, more fuel.

4. Fly to Tambor (fastest)

Local airlines fly SJO → Tambor airstrip in ~25 minutes; from Tambor it's a 1–1.5h taxi or shuttle to Santa Teresa. Most expensive per person, strict luggage limits (soft bags, ~14kg typical), unbeatable when you're short on time or long on motion sickness. Surfboards: check the airline's board policy before booking.

5. Public bus (cheapest)

San José → Puntarenas bus, walk onto the ferry as a foot passenger, then the Paquera → Cobanó → Santa Teresa bus chain. All-day mission, backpacker budget, great stories. Bring snacks, patience and colones in small bills.

Taxis and getting overcharged

Unofficial taxi pricing here is... creative. A real example from our community chat: $70 quoted for a one-way to Cabuya, several times the fair rate. Defenses: agree the price before getting in, ask the community for the going rate and trusted driver contacts (members share vetted numbers constantly), and split shuttles with other travelers, ride-share requests get posted in the chat daily and almost always get filled.

Arrival tips from the community

• Tight connection at SJO? Community insider tip: at immigration you can ask airport staff to direct you to the special assistance line (to the right) if you're about to miss a connection. Ask politely; it works.
• Landing after 3pm? Consider a night near the airport or the no-ferry drive, missing the last ferry with a rental car is a classic first-day disaster.
• Book high-season transport (Dec–Apr) days ahead; green season you can improvise.
